Tug of War with Depression

peekIt’s been a while since I’ve posted. Truth is, I’m being stalked…it’s this pesky relentless little thing sometimes referred to as depression that seems to grab hold of me from time to time. That monster has the power to shake me up and tear me down. Sometimes I can slay that dragon like the superhuman I am. Sometimes the fight drains the ‘super’ right out of me. Sometimes it lasts a day, sometimes a week, sometimes a little longer, sometimes a lot longer. My battle is mild compared to the wars others fight with this demon. When I am struggling and I smile, it’s a joyous moment. I am not wearing a mask. There are moments that grab me, usually when I am with people, simple genuine moments of joy that gently kiss my spirit. There are a number of things that have the power to uplift my soul during difficult times if only for a short while. Kindness is the one gift that packs the biggest punch. Random Acts of Kindness, carrying them out and / or witnessing them has a definite impact during trying times. The challenge for me, is accepting these gifts when I find myself in the grips of despair.

Fortunately, I don’t live in this space, I only visit periodically from time to time. Those visits teach me the importance of compassion, thoughtfulness, and kindness. It is in that place that I learn the ugliness of self-sabotage. It is there I learn the importance and the impact of sharing kind hearted, loving words of encouragement to those around me. It is thanks to those darker moments that I am generous with compliments and smiles.

When I am in a good place, I am feeling hopeful and alive. My time is spent with a focus on staying positive and seeking out the gifts of every day bliss. Joy comes easily. These are the moments, days, weeks, months, time I relish. Appreciation and gratitude abound! I’ve come to recognize the importance of Creativity and Passion in keeping my spirits up. When I’m putting genuine effort into doing the things I am truly passionate about, I soar! It’s easy and powerful and real.

I am on a mission to play with my creativity and reignite my passion. My blog will reflect that mission. Renaming my blog “Mixed Bag of Nuts” might be suiting 🙂 It’s time to get creative, mix it up, shake it up, stand tall, grow fierce and just have fun.

Shedding Light Into The Darkness

FreedomI think it’s safe to say that at least most of us suffer bouts of self-doubt and levels of depression from time to time and we all have our own ways of dealing with it when it hits. Some of us become angry and take it out on the world, some of us become withdrawn and hide from everyone in our lives. No matter who you are, no matter how you handle it, the truth is it sucks for all of us.

Depression, self-consciousness, whatever name you choose to give it, is the result of indecisiveness and lack of commitment caused by poor self-judgement. Think about it…every time you’ve found yourself in this downward spiral, you’ve doubted yourself. You’ve cut yourself short and beat yourself up in one way or another. Truth feels right, you feel bad because you are lying to yourself. And when you ‘speak’ to yourself this way, it becomes very hard to make decisions and / or commit to anything. Pay attention to this next time that dark cloud starts to hover. What is it you are telling yourself in your time of need?

It’s not your job to judge yourself. You were created with exact divine precision. You are impeccable, exquisite, and unique. You were created exactly as you are for good reason. You and you alone have the ability to carry out your Divine Plan. What you may perceive as your greatest fault, may in fact be your greatest gift. Consider this; It is those we called “bossy” in grade school who became the greatest managers and “the nicest girl in town” would probably make a mighty lousy choice for a lawyer. Every so-called flaw is a gift when you take the time to look at it in the right light. You truly are Divine. A perfect creation.

Life has a way of throwing some pretty nasty blows our way and even then, what we may perceive as a disaster may in fact be a gift. How many times have you had your heart broken and thought you would never be able to go on? When you look back years, or even months later, you find yourself thanking your lucky stars that relationship didn’t work out!

Whatever your purpose, whatever your destiny, there is a power greater than you working for your greater good. It is only through these eyes that you will see your perfection. It is only through this plan that you will see the flawless organization of the divine chaos that we call “Life”.

Suicide and Depression – What Part Do We Play?

This is based on a powerful speech my 13 year old daughter Allyssa gave to her class last year. I feel that the message is too important not to share. It’s a message that should be shared with all youth, as well as adults because sadly even at our age, we continue to fight this battle. ~ Sandy Bucholtz

Did you know suicide is the leading cause of non-accidental death among children and youth in Ontario? Three deaths every week. More children die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, respiratory illness, and diabetes combined.

If this horrifying trend continues, how many of our own friends will we have to bury?

It’s time for change! It’s time for us to STOP! And start asking questions; why is this happening? Is there something we can do to turn things around?

Social media, bullying, and untreated mental health issues rank high on the list of factors people talk about, but I have to wonder if it could also be due to the hurtful, frequent efforts of dismissal we experience every day by our peers.

As a people watcher, I see countless acts of unprovoked dissing every single day in my school. You know what I’m talking about; the exaggerated rolling of the eyes, and heavy sighs, the rude comments, suggestive statements, and rumors. That feeling you get when you’re just being yourself, goofing around just doing your own thing and out of nowhere people start calling you “weird”  or “loser” and giving you those looks that let you know you are not behaving to someone else’s standards. We’ve all experienced them at one time or another. Even subtle comments that often get overlooked by others can be so hurtful.

Sometimes these things are done to tease, sometimes, they are done to make someone feel like they don’t belong. No matter what the reasoning behind it, it hurts. Yes, I realize that for most people doing the teasing and taunting, the whole point is to cause hurt. So I ask you this:

How many times can a person be treated so unfairly, or dismissed every time they speak before they start to wonder and eventually believe that they are just a waste of space?

If all that pressure alone weren’t enough, let’s not forget to add to it the pressure from the media with all the “loose weight”, “flawless skin”, “perfect grades”, “fashion first”, “must-have”, and “must-be’s” All around us, each of us is constantly hearing the same message “I am not enough” , “I will never be enough”. How can we not question our worth?

Maybe I can’t change the media, and I may not be able to change my school. All I can do, is do what I can. I will choose to treat my peers like they matter, even if they don’t wear the same clothes, think the same thoughts, or get the same grades as me. I will accept them even though they are different, because at least if they are different, I know it’s because they have the courage not to be a carbon copy of someone else.

~ Allyssa Bucholtz
Our behaviors, our attitudes, affect the lives of those around us. Our smile can mean the world to someone struggling within. Smile at strangers, be generous with your compliments, be gentle with people who may be having a rough day (or month). You make a difference, good or bad, every day you leave your mark. Is yours the mark of someone who’s made a positive difference? When you are courteous to others, others are courteous to you. Embrace the power you have to shape the world around you!
